The Golden Age of Virtuoso Euphonium Solos: Interpretation and technique for performing the legendary solo works of Simone Mantia, Joseph DeLuca, Arthur Pryor, Jean-Baptiste Arban, and more. (Class length 2 hrs.)

This masterclass will delve into the techniques and interpretation required to perform the body of euphonium repertoire often referred to as the “Golden Age” solos, composed in the late 19th and early 20th century. While many of these works follow the traditional theme and variation format, there are additional forms and styles that fall under this description, including the performance of operatic arias and other vocal works from the 19th century. Based on his experiences as a euphonium soloist with “The President’s Own” U.S. Marine Band and recording artist (Golden Age of Brass, Vol. 3, Summit Records label), the presenter will discuss the unique demands of this repertoire, performance practice and interpretation, and practical tips on how to achieve ideal results. While a portion of this masterclass will be in lecture presentation format, there will be an opportunity for select participants to perform for twenty minutes each in a masterclass setting. Please note that performer slots are limited to four (4) for this session, are on a first come/first served  basis, and must pay a premium fee. All others may register for the class as auditors at a lower fee.

Biography

Michael J. Colburn, Col. USMC (Ret.) is a freelance guest conductor and clinician who regularly leads professional and student ensembles in festivals, residencies, and a variety of other settings throughout the country. He is currently the Visiting Director of Orchestras at the Crane School of Music, SUNY Potsdam and also serves as the Music Director of The Orchestra of Northern New York, a professional orchestra based in Potsdam, NY. He is the Music Director and Conductor of the Me2 Orchestra in Burlington, VT, a classical music organization devoted to erasing the stigma of mental illness through supportive rehearsals and inspiring performances, and is an Affiliate Artist at the University of Vermont, where he teaches euphonium.

From 2014 until 2022, Colburn served as the Director of Bands at Butler University in Indianapolis, where he conducted the Butler University Wind Ensemble and offered instruction in conducting, euphonium, and the history and literature of the wind band. Before his tenure at Butler, Colburn served for 27 years in “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band, holding a variety of positions including Principal Euphonium (1991-1996), Assistant Director (1996-2004), and Director (2004-2014). As Director, Colburn was music advisor to White House and regularly conducted the Marine Band and Chamber Orchestra at the Executive Mansion.

During his career as a professional euphonium player, Colburn recorded “The Golden Age of Brass, Vol. 3” on the Summit Records label, a collection of classic virtuoso euphonium solos. Colburn is a Past President of the American Bandmasters Association, has been a board member of the National Band Association, and currently serves as Vice President for Project Enhancement for the John Philip Sousa Foundation.
