Biography

Flutist Amy Porter has garnered acclaim for her musical prowess and dedication to education, establishing herself as a vibrant force in the world of music. Her performances, from Michael Daugherty’s Trail of Tears to a memorable October 2022 concert at Carnegie Hall honoring Lukas Foss’s centennial, showcase her artistic range.

As a professor at the University of Michigan, Porter mentors emerging musicians and leads intensive flute residencies across local colleges. Through her Blue Flute Studio, she provides essential resources, including exercises and audition materials, to ready the next generation of flutists.

Amy has hosted the popular “PorterFlute Pod” podcast for over 100 episodes and launched her Anatomy of Sound™ AOS-Wellness website, featuring a curriculum dedicated to peaceful breathing, yoga, and meditation. These platforms emphasize self-care as a cornerstone of a thriving musical career.

Porter is also the visionary behind VoiceBox 3-D LLC, where she innovates teaching tools like “My Breathing Buddy,” merging her musical expertise with entrepreneurial spirit. Offering mini-residencies during performances, she fosters personal connections with colleagues and audiences, rejuvenating their passion for music.

A celebrated performer, Amy has won prestigious awards including the 3rd Kobe International Flute Competition and has been featured on NPR and PBS Live From Lincoln Center. Her recording career includes a standout CD, In Translation, praised for its lyrical beauty.

Porter is part of Trio Virado, alongside violist Jaime Amador and guitarist João Luiz. They recently recorded their second album Trialogue. Previously, their recording Mangabeira was lauded in the American Record Guide which described them as “…the perfect Trio.”

Formerly a member of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Ms. Porter is Principal Flute of North Carolina’s Brevard Music Center, where she performs as soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral player.
