Daniel Perantoni

Biography

Daniel Perantoni is one of the most celebrated figures in the tuba world — a consummate artist, master teacher, and visionary pedagogue whose influence spans generations. Known affectionately as “Mr. P” by his students, he holds the distinction of Tuba-Provost Professor Emeritus at the Jacobs School of Music, Indiana University, and is widely regarded as a “tubist’s tubist,” renowned for his lyrical, singing tone and impeccable musicianship.

Perantoni’s performing career has taken him to some of the world’s most prestigious stages and festivals, including Carnegie Hall, the Monterey Jazz Festival, the Spoleto Festival U.S.A., the Adelaide Festival in Australia, the Banff Centre for the Arts in Canada, and the Montreux Brass Congress in Switzerland. As a soloist, he has appeared throughout the United States, Europe, Japan, Israel, Taiwan, China, Australia, and Brazil. He served as Principal Tuba with both the Amsterdam Philharmonic (Kunstman Orkest) and the San Antonio Symphony, and as a member of the United States Army Band (Pershing’s Own) at Fort Myer, Virginia.

A dedicated educator, Perantoni has held faculty positions at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and Arizona State University before joining Indiana University, where he shaped the careers of countless musicians. His former students now hold principal and section positions in major orchestras, opera companies, music conservatories, and every significant military band in the United States and Canada. In recognition of his extraordinary contributions to the field, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Tuba and Euphonium Association.

A founding member of Summit Brass, Symphonia, the St. Louis Brass Quintet, and the Matteson-Phillips Tubajazz Consort, Perantoni’s artistry spans classical, chamber, and jazz performance. He can be heard on numerous recordings across these ensembles as well as on solo classical and jazz albums.
A Buffet Crampon B&S Artist, Perantoni has collaborated with Buffet Crampon B&S in the development of both the Perantucci and Mr. P Tubas and is the designer of the widely used Mr. P Tuba Mouthpieces — a further testament to his enduring impact on the instrument and its players.
