OK, you’ve decided you want to play some jazz—or perhaps you already play jazz and want to get better. This masterclass can help you achieve that goal. The class is designed primarily for bassists who want to develop a better understanding of supportive bass lines and improve their solo playing. But, it is also valuable for players of every instrument. Understanding what the bass is doing—and how the bass supports the music— can help any instrumentalist become a stronger soloist and musician.

How is this achieved? Harvie S has written a series of duets specifically for this purpose. Each duet has a well-constructed bass line on the bottom and a melodic solo line on top. The top parts are available for all instruments, with parts in Bb, Eb, treble clef, and bass clef. Each duet also comes with MP3s of both the top and bottom parts in three different tempos, so you can practice by playing along. The melodies and solos are fully written out, with the chord changes included. These are not simple exercises. They require practice, concentration, and an understanding of the harmony. But this is where jazz becomes different from classical music. Once you learn the melody and understand the written material, you are ready to go further—to put your own spin on it, improvise, and make it your own. Harvie S has had great success using these duets with students, and has even ended up recording some of them on my CDs.

Prepare Before We Meet. When you sign up for the master class, you will receive a duet in advance. You can begin learning and studying it before the first meeting. That way, we can get right into the process of understanding the music, developing your bass line, working on your solo, and learning how the two parts interact.

Understanding the Role of the Bass. It is extremely important to understand the role of the bass in a jazz performance. Join the masterclass to learn the basics of jazz bass playing, and how to create effective solos.

Musicians on other instruments (classical and jazz) can also learn how to perform simple but appealing jazz solos above the bass line.

Biography

Harvie S, award-winning bassist, educator, composer, arranger, and producer is continually challenging himself and his peers, expanding the borders of musical direction. His latest co-led CD, Departure Plucky Strum on Whaling City Records teams him with extraordinary guitarist Sheryl Bailey in a powerful duo with acoustic bass and guitar. It was Downbeat magazine’s pick in August 2017 and received rave reviews.

He composed the musical themes for the documentaries The Trumpet Kings, The Piano Legends, and John Coltrane. He has also been featured in articles in The New York Times, The New York Post, The Daily News, Japan Times, USA Today, Downbeat, All About Jazz, Jazz Cadence, Jazz Improv, Coda (Canada), JazzTimes, Swing Journal (Japan), Jazz Life (Japan), Jazz Forum (Poland), Jazz Hot (France), Hot House, Jazz Podium, The Los Angeles Times, and Jazz-It (Italy).

In addition to his performance career, Harvie S is an active educator. He is a Professor of Jazz Bass and Jazz Ensemble at the Manhattan School of Music in both undergraduate and graduate divisions. He is written a series of bass duets that are revolutionary in their concept for teaching and performing.
