Biography

Jean-Christophe Dobrzelewski is an internationally recognized trumpet soloist, educator, and academic leader whose career bridges artistic excellence and program-level leadership. He serves as Professor of Trumpet and Chair of the Instrumental Department at the Wells School of Music at West Chester University of Pennsylvania, where he leads a faculty of over 30 performers and educators. In this role, he oversees curricular direction, fosters faculty collaboration, and supports student development, with a leadership approach grounded in collaboration, mentorship, and a commitment to artistic excellence, while contributing to the broader artistic and academic mission of the School of Music.

Dobrzelewski brings significant national and international leadership experience to his work, including a decade of service as Conference Director for the International Trumpet Guild. In that capacity, he guided the planning and execution of one of the world’s leading conferences for brass musicians, fostering global collaboration and advancing the organization’s artistic and educational mission.

An accomplished performer, Dobrzelewski has appeared as a soloist with orchestras, wind ensembles, and chamber groups throughout the United States and internationally. He is a founding member of the Grammy-nominated Tromba Mundi Trumpet Ensemble and remains an active collaborator and recitalist. His discography reflects a wide range of solo and chamber work, including Tryptique, Tryptique Renewal, Eternal Source of Light Divine, and his recent solo album Passion Dance. His chamber recordings with Tromba Mundi include Sinfonia Americana and Quest for Adventure. He is also the artistic force behind the MSR Classics release Shadowcatcher (2011), a National Endowment for the Arts-supported project for which he served as Executive Producer.

Dobrzelewski is an active contributor to trumpet pedagogy and repertoire development, with publications spanning multiple publishers and longstanding collaboration with Hickman Music Editions. His work includes solo and chamber arrangements as well as a widely adopted multi-volume series of orchestral excerpt books for trumpet, recognized as a key resource for students and professionals.

Originally trained in Switzerland and France, he received the Prix de Trompette from the Conservatoire of Rueil-Malmaison. He holds a Master of Music from the University of Maine and a Doctor of Musical Arts from Arizona State University. His principal teachers include David Hickman, Eric Aubier, Guy Touvron, Wolfgang Bauer, Samuel Pilafian, and Jean-François Michel.

Dobrzelewski is a Stomvi Artist and Clinician and performs exclusively on Stomvi instruments.
