Audition Tips on the Bassoon Concerti of Mozart and Weber with Jeff Keesecker (Class length 2 hrs.)

Professor Keesecker will present a two-hour masterclass on audition preparation and playing techniques for professional orchestral auditions, college ensembles placement, and other types of competitions.  Audition materials to be covered will be excerpts from the bassoon concerti by Mozart and Weber.

Five (5) performers purchasing the Performer’s Fee (on a first-come, first-served basis) will be able to perform for the class and be coached by Prof. Keesecker for approximately 20 minutes each.  All others may participate as Auditors at a lower fee.  A Question and Answer session will conclude the class.

Biography

Jeff Keesecker is the Professor of Bassoon at Florida State University and is Principal Bassoon of the Tallahassee and Pensacola Symphony Orchestras. He has held positions as Second Bassoon with the Florida Orchestra (Tampa), Principal Bassoon with the Sarasota Orchestra, and Principal Bassoon with Solisti New York (NYC). He has also performed as Principal Bassoon with the Florida Orchestra, St Gallen Sinfonie (Switzerland), Savannah Philharmonic, Jacksonville Symphony, and the Festival Orchestra of the National Music Festival. His extensive teaching experience includes being on the bassoon faculties of the Interlochen Arts Camp (Valade Fellow), National Music Festival, Utah Music Festival, and the Animas Music Festival. Prior to coming to FSU, he was Bassoon Professor at the University of South Florida.

In his 35+ years at FSU his bassoon studio has consistently been among the largest in the nation. His former students’ successes include positions in the Minnesota Orchestra, Dallas Symphony, Auckland Philharmonia, President’s Own Marine Band, Hawaii Symphony, Grant Park Symphony, Santa Fe Opera, Akropolis Reed Quintet, Milwaukee Symphony, and Greenville (SC) Symphony, among many others.

He has a long history of performing solo recitals and concertos on four continents, including numerous performances at the Conferences of the International Double Reed Society (IDRS). His album recording, Bassoon Music of the Americas, which includes works that had not previously been recorded, has drawn considerable attention and accolades. He also presented the world premiere of Eric Ewazen’s Concerto for Bassoon and Wind Ensemble in 2003 at the WASBE Conference in Sweden.

Professor Keesecker is a native of Sarasota, Florida. His first teacher, Trevor Cramer (who later founded Trevco, the preeminent music publisher and purveyor of double reed repertoire), provided him the foundation and inspiration to pursue a career in classical bassoon. He went on to study with William Winstead at FSU where he received his Bachelor of Music, and then to The Juilliard School for his Master of Music, where he studied with Steven Maxym. His further training includes participation in the Aspen Music Festival, National Repertory Orchestra, Waterloo Music Festival, and the New York String Orchestra Seminar. He is extremely proud to be continuing the musical and pedagogical traditions set by Mr. Winstead at FSU, and occupy the same bassoon office where he was once mentored.
