Biography
John Lofton, originally from Philadelphia, is a graduate of the Oberlin Conservatory and is now a member of the Los Angeles Philharmonic as bass trombone.
His career as a professional musician began in Mexico with a position with the State Orchestra of Mexico. He became a member of the Honolulu Symphony and later a member of the Phoenix Symphony before moving to Los Angeles. He has also played or toured with several orchestras including The Cleveland Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, Santa Fe Opera, and many others.
John is also a long-time member of Summit Brass and is a continuing instructor/performer at the Rafael Méndez Brass Institute. In addition, John is an adjunct instructor at the Colburn School and the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at California State-Long Beach.
John serves on many boards including The League of American Orchestras and the Summit Brass. As an advocate for working musicians from all backgrounds, John is the LA Phil’s Resident Fellows representative and is also a founding member of the Spiral Trombone Quartet, an all-African American group representing African American artistry in classical music.
