Biography

Kenneth Tse is widely recognized as one of the world’s preeminent classical saxophonists, celebrated for his deft technical prowess, enchanting sound, and enduring impact on the art form. He burst onto the international scene in 1996 as the winner of the New York Artists International Award and The Alex Award from the National Alliance for Excellence, both of which led to acclaimed performances at Carnegie Hall. The New York Times hailed him as “a young virtuoso,” a distinction that has only deepened with time.

Since those early successes, Tse has performed as a soloist on five continents, appearing with distinguished ensembles including the Strasbourg Philharmonic Orchestra, Hong Kong Sinfonietta, Szczecin Philharmonic Orchestra, Thailand Philharmonic, City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong, and the United States Navy Band. He is a sought-after artist and clinician at landmark events such as the World Saxophone Congress, the North American Saxophone Alliance National Conference, the California Band Directors’ Association, and the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinics.

A prolific recording artist, Tse has released twenty-three CDs spanning a wide range of saxophone repertoire. Critics praise his “captivating” sound, “supremely elegant tone and sheer virtuosity,” and “incredible technical and interpretive skills.” His most ambitious recording project to date is the groundbreaking Saxophone Concerto Anthology with conductor Ian Hobson and Sinfonia Varsovia, a landmark three-volume collection featuring eleven concertos, both newly works dedicated to Tse and cornerstone pieces of the standard repertoire, representing the first undertaking of its kind. This commitment to expanding the saxophone’s recorded legacy reflects his broader dedication to new music: over forty works have been dedicated to him by composers worldwide, most recently a concerto by the distinguished American composer Lowell Liebermann, which received its premiere in spring 2025. His arrangements for saxophone are published by Reed Music (Australia), and his writings have appeared in the Saxophone Journal, The Instrumentalist, Fanfare Magazine, Saxophone Symposium, and international publications in Japan and beyond.

An equally devoted educator, Tse has led masterclasses at the Paris Conservatory, the Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory, the Fryderyk Chopin Institute in Warsaw, and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. He has served on the judging panels of prestigious international competitions, including the Adolphe Sax International Competition in Dinant, Belgium, and the Andorra SaxFest Competition. In 2024, he was honored as a University of Iowa Distinguished Chair Professor of Saxophone, recognizing his exceptional contributions to scholarship, teaching, and service at the national and international level.

At the University of Iowa, Tse has built one of the field’s most respected studio programs over more than two decades. His students have earned positions at top academic institutions, won international competitions, and released acclaimed recordings. He also teaches at the American Saxophone Academy each summer and leads a studio outreach program that brings live performances to assisted living facilities, retirement communities, and homes for individuals with developmental disabilities. He currently serves as an advisor to IOWinds Alliance, a nonprofit dedicated to advancing wind and brass music education for youth across Iowa.

Tse’s commitment to expanding the global reach of classical saxophone extends to his hometown of Hong Kong, where he founded the Hong Kong International Saxophone Symposium in 2009. What began as a pioneering event attracting saxophonists from around the world has since grown into the Hong Kong International Saxophone Society, a lasting platform dedicated to nurturing interest in and elevating the standard of classical saxophone performance throughout the region.  He holds the rare distinction of being the first saxophonist to concurrently hold elected presidencies in both the North American Saxophone Alliance and the International Saxophone Committee.
