Lori Wike

Biography

Lori Wike joined the Utah Symphony as Principal Bassoon in 2005. Originally from North Carolina, she holds a Bachelor of Music degree and Performer’s Certificate from the Eastman School of Music and a Master of Arts degree from the University of California, Irvine.

A former member of the Louisville Orchestra, Wike has also performed with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, the Moscow Chamber Orchestra, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and the Aspen Festival and Chamber Orchestras. Prior to joining the Utah Symphony, she performed for three seasons with the New World Symphony under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas.

In addition to her orchestral activities, Wike maintains an active schedule of solo and chamber performances. Her solo appearances include performances with the Utah Symphony, Aspen Contemporary Ensemble, University of California-Irvine Symphony, University of Utah Philharmonia, Westminster Chamber Orchestra and the Utah Arts Festival.

A devoted teacher, coach, and clinician, Wike holds the positions of Adjunct Professor of Bassoon at the University of Utah, Instructor at Westminster University, and Faculty-Artist at Festival Napa Valley. She has also served as a guest faculty member for NYO-USA and the Aspen Music Festival. Her pedagogy emphasizes effective practicing strategies and performance mindset optimization, development of a wide range of controlled articulation, dynamic, and expressive techniques, circumstance-tailored reed making approaches, and audition, trial and probation year coaching.
