Biography

Drummer Luther Gray’s expansive career defies easy categorization, seamlessly bridging punk rock, straight-ahead jazz, and the avant-garde. Born in New Orleans and raised in Washington, D.C., Gray cut his teeth in the D.C. punk scene before earning a Bachelor of Music from the University of Miami in 1995.

Returning to D.C., he performed alongside jazz legends such as Butch Warren, John Hicks, Cecil Payne and Buck Hill. After relocating to Boston in 2000, Gray became a vital force in the city’s modern and free jazz communities. He leads his own acclaimed projects, including the band Lawnmower, and is a core member of The Fully Celebrated Orchestra. He is also the drummer in saxophone innovator Jerry Bergonzi’s band which, for over 15 years, has had a weekly Monday night residency at the Cambridge club, The Lilypad.

A highly sought-after collaborator, Gray has performed and recorded worldwide with luminaries including Anthony Braxton, Jerry Bergonzi, Jim Hobbs, Taylor Ho Bynum, Bill Pierce, George Garzone, Ken Vandermark, and Joe Morris, appearing on esteemed labels like AUM Fidelity, ESP, HatHUT and Clean Feed.
Beyond his rigorous performance schedule, Gray is a dedicated educator. He teaches privately and has instructed ensembles and masterclasses at prestigious institutions, including the New England Conservatory, Berklee, Longy School of Music, and MIT.
