Let’s Talk Saxophone: An Open Masterclass with Otis Murphy (Class length 2 hrs.)

An interactive masterclass focusing on repertoire, performance, and pedagogy. Five (5) performers will play works of their own choosing for approximately 20 minutes each (with or without accompaniment) and must pay a premium fee on a first-come, first-served basis. All others may participate as auditors at a lower fee. An open Q&A session will be included.

Biography

Otis Murphy is Professor of Saxophone at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where he joined the faculty at age twenty eight, becoming one of the youngest professors in the school’s history. Recognized internationally for his artistry, he has performed in more than twenty five countries across four continents, appearing on distinguished stages including Carnegie Hall and Merkin Hall in New York, Casals Hall in Tokyo, and the Palau de la Música in Valencia.

Dr. Murphy is a laureate in several national and international competitions, including the Adolphe Sax International Saxophone Competition and the Jean Marie Londeix International Saxophone Competition. His discography includes numerous acclaimed recordings, most notably his contribution to Pacifica Quartet’s Contemporary Voices, featuring Ellen Taaffe Zwilich’s Quintet for Alto Saxophone and String Quartet, which won the GRAMMY Award for Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance.

Internationally respected as a pedagogue, Dr. Murphy has led guest teaching engagements and master classes at major institutions such as the Paris Conservatory, Amsterdam Conservatory, Cologne Academy of Music, Royal College of Music in London, and the Hamamatsu International Wind Instrument Academy. His students have garnered significant recognition, earning awards in major competitions and holding professional appointments worldwide as performers, educators, and members of premier military ensembles.
