Biography
Portuguese tuba player and Yamaha International Artist Sérgio Carolino is one of the most acclaimed musicians on the music scene. Since 2002 he has been principal tuba of the Porto Symphony Orchestra Casa da Musica and was professor of tuba at the Porto Superior School of Music and Arts from 2006 to 2019. Since 2023 he has been a visiting professor at the Senzoku Gakuen College of Music in Tokyo, and in 2010 established Gravissimo! – Alcobaç International Low Brass Festival & Academy.
Among his many awards, Sérgio received the Roger Bobo Award for Excellence in Recording eight times for albums in jazz, solo tuba, chamber music, large ensemble, and commercial music. He has premiered new works for tuba all over the world, and has formed innovative music groups such as 2tUBA&friends, XL Duo, How Low Can You Go?, The Postcard Brass Band, TUBAX DUO, COLOR WHEEL ENSEMBLE, Mr SC & The Wild Bones Gang, TUBAB Duo, Surrealistic Discussion, Funky Bones Factory!, Conical Brass, Tuba&Drums Double Duo, Moderato Tangabile, Tuba ‘N Tuba, and several others.
As soloist, Carolino has performed with countless orchestras around the world, visiting such countries as Spain, Russia, Germany, United States, Japan, Switzerland, Lithuania, Iceland, Australia, Argentina, and many others.
Mr. Carolino plays signature mouthpieces made by Brass Lab MoMo in Japan, and the signature Mushroom Cup Mute made by Johannes Schlipfinger in Austria. In 2010 he conceived a new instrument based on British virtuoso tuba player Oren Marshall’s Orenophone, made by Tim Sullivan and Harold Hartman, which he calls “Lucifer!”
